Getting a Custom AFO, DAFO or SMAFO at Florence Paediatrics

At Florence Paediatrics, we provide custom-made Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs), Dynamic AFOs (DAFOs) and SupraMalleolar AFOs (SMAFOs) for children who need extra support with walking, standing, or maintaining proper foot and ankle alignment.

An AFO, sometimes referred to as a brace or splint, is a device worn on the lower leg to help manage a range of conditions, such as cerebral palsy, muscle weakness, hypertonia, or joint instability. Whether your child needs help improving their gait, supporting posture, or managing a neurological or musculoskeletal condition, each Orthosis we provide is uniquely tailored to their needs.

Expert support, designed just for your child

During your child’s appointment, our specialist orthotists will carry out a thorough assessment to understand their mobility, comfort, and goals. We use traditional casting techniques using plaster of paris as well as advanced 3D scanning technology to take quick, precise measurements of your child’s lower leg. These scans or casts are then used to design an Orthosis that fits accurately and functions effectively. From the flexibility of the material to the shape, padding, and strapping, everything is chosen to suit your child’s individual needs and daily activities.

After the cast or scan and assessment, your child’s Orthosis design is sent straight to our UK-based manufacturing teams, who specialise in making custom orthotics for children. Every device is crafted using strong yet lightweight materials, carefully shaped to offer the right balance of support and comfort.

If your child uses insoles, footwear, or other orthotic devices, we’ll ensure the Orthosis is compatible and works well as part of a wider care plan.

When the Orthosis is ready, we’ll invite you back for a fitting appointment to check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and guide you through how to use it safely and comfortably at home. We’ll also make sure it works well with any insoles or footwear your child might already be using. Our orthotists are experienced in paediatrics and are always happy to answer questions or provide follow-up care as your child grows and their needs change.
