KAFOs and conventional metal Orthoses

At MedFac Orthotics, we specialise in the design and manufacture of bespoke KAFOs for children, young people, and adults—offered through our trusted brands, Halo Medical and Florence Paediatric. These advanced orthoses are carefully prescribed and built to help improve mobility, stability, and independence for individuals with complex lower limb needs.

What is a KAFO?

A KAFO (Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis) is a full-leg brace that supports the knee, ankle, and foot. It is typically used when there is significant muscle weakness, joint instability, or neurological impairment affecting the entire lower limb. Common conditions that benefit from KAFOs include post-polio syndrome, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury, or severe osteoarthritis. KAFOs help maintain proper alignment, reduce pain, and support standing or walking. Our KAFOs are custom-made to each patient’s anatomy and needs—featuring lightweight materials, precise joint mechanics, and custom fittings for maximum function and comfort.

Every KAFO we provide is based on a combination of conventional casting and measuring techniques, as well as accurate 3D scanning technology that allows us to capture exact limb geometry with speed and precision. The casts or scan data are sent directly to our UK-based manufacturing team, where skilled technicians craft each device by hand to meet the individual’s specific clinical requirements and comfort preferences. Our orthotists work closely with patients and families throughout the process to ensure optimal outcomes and long-term support.

These devices are not only vital in treating diagnosed conditions—they also play a key role in improving mobility, preventing further complications, and enabling participation in everyday life. Whether it’s supporting a child learning to walk or helping an adult stand more confidently, KAFOs can dramatically improve function, posture, and independence.

At MedFac Orthotics, all of our devices are produced here in the UK with careful attention to quality, durability, and sustainability. We use environmentally conscious materials where possible and minimise waste in our production workflows. With a deep focus on clinical collaboration, patient comfort, and long-term care, we’re proud to deliver orthotic solutions that truly make a difference.
