At MedFac Orthotics, we offer custom-made Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs) through both our Halo Medical and Florence Paediatric services. Designed for patients of all ages, our bespoke AFOs provide targeted support to assist with walking, improve lower limb alignment, and reduce pain or instability caused by a wide range of neurological, muscular, or skeletal conditions.
What to expect from our bespoke AFOs
Our orthotists are highly experienced in assessing and prescribing the most appropriate AFO design for each individual’s needs. Whether treating a child with cerebral palsy or an adult recovering from a stroke, we ensure each device offers the right balance of support, mobility, and comfort. We use advanced 3D scanning technology to capture precise limb measurements, allowing us to create highly tailored orthoses that integrate seamlessly into daily life.
AFOs can be prescribed for conditions such as foot drop, muscle weakness, hypertonia, or joint instability, and they are often essential in paediatric rehabilitation or long-term adult care. We offer a variety of styles and designs—from rigid to articulated options—and our in-house manufacturing allows us to adapt each AFO with features such as padding, strapping, reinforcements, and joint systems based on each clinical requirement.
All of our AFOs are manufactured in the UK by a skilled team of technicians working closely with our clinical staff. Every step—from assessment to delivery—is handled with attention to both function and comfort, ensuring the final device supports natural movement while helping patients achieve their individual goals.

What is a DAFO or SMAFO?
A DAFO (Dynamic Ankle-Foot Orthosis) or SMAFO (Supra-Malleolar Ankle-Foot Orthosis) are a more flexible, low-profile brace designed primarily for children with mild to moderate motor challenges. Often used to support walking patterns in conditions like cerebral palsy, hypotonia, or toe-walking, DAFOs and SMAFOs offer dynamic control while allowing natural motion. They gently guide the foot and ankle into proper alignment without fully restricting movement, helping to build strength and stability over time. At Florence Paediatric MedFac Orthotics, our DAFOs and SMAFOs are crafted with close clinical input to ensure the best fit, comfort, and effectiveness for younger patients still in development.
